Since the Tang and Song dynasties, migrants from Putian in Fujian brought their knowledge of saltmaking and adapted it to Hainan’s coastline.

Laoshi’s ancient salt fields were once destroyed, excavated into shrimp ponds under the name of “modernization.”
For 25 years, the wetlands declined and benthic species disappeared.
But ecological restoration brought life back:
- abandoned ponds became ecological basins,
- wetlands recovered,
- tamarind trees returned,
- and both nature and community began to heal.

Today, the salt fields and wetlands of Laoshi are recognized as:
